China is driving big growth for Unity mobile game installs

In the first three months of this year, the folks at Unity reportedly saw a roughly 30 percent increase in Unity-made mobile game installs around the world, compared to the last three months of 2015.

China accounted for the largest stake of that by far, with 31 percent of the world’s Unity mobile game installs.

That data comes courtesy of a recent Unity report drawn from the company’s analytics data, and it’s worth taking a look at if you’re at all interested in Unity’s perspective on the global mobile game market.

According to Unity, in the first 3 months of this year nearly 220,000 Unity-made mobile games were installed 4.2 billion times on 1.7 billion unique devices. 31 percent were in China, 11 percent were in the U.S. and 5 percent were in Brazil.

That’s well in line with prior reports that China’s mobile game market is booming, in part because the number of Chinese mobile game players is larger than the population of the United States.

In terms of global platform breakdown, 81 percent of Unity mobile games installed during the period were on Android devices, while just 17 percent were on iOS devices. That’s an intriguing change from the 74/17 percent Android/iOS install split Unity reported last year, since it implies that the Android market for mobile games (at least, in Unity’s eyes) is growing — but not at the expense of the iOS market.
